The CHSSP is excited to welcome Sareena Crawford as the 2026-27 Marchand Public Engagement Intern. Sareena Crawford is a fourth-year PhD student in History with a Designated Emphasis in Feminist Theory and Research at the University of California, Davis. She is currently working on a dissertation that is a social history of Black kingroups and formerly enslaved people in northern California with a focus on Black women as facilitators of racial uplift in the late 19th and early 20th centuries.
The California History–Social Science Project (CHSSP) has been awarded a prestigious American History and Civics Education—National Activities Grant from the U.S. Department of Education for our new initiative, Foundations of Freedom: Strengthening Civic Learning in Schools.
Did you know that the California Education Code stipulates that all students should have access to standards-based arts education in dance, music, theatre, visual, and media arts, and yet only eleven percent of California schools meet this requirement? In fact, twenty-one percent of California schools do not offer any form of formal arts instruction.
The CHSSP has welcomed a new executive director. Dawniell Black assumed the statewide leadership role at UC Davis in early August. Dawniell is no stranger to history-social science leadership in California. Prior to her CHSSP appointment, Dawniell worked at the Elk Grove Unified School District for 20 years, first as a History-Social Science (HSS) teacher and then as a Program Specialist in HSS and Physical Education.
Over the past two years, the California Subject Matter Project (CSMP) has been helping design professional development for the rollout of UTK, or Universal Transitional Kindergarten.

“Nothing Less Than Justice” is an exciting new webpage memorializing and investigating the significance of California’s International Women’s Year as well as the lives of participating delegates. The ambitious digital humanities project, which presents multiple possible classroom uses, is the result of a collaboration between the University of Houston and the University of California’s Irvine, Davis, and San Diego campuses.
The California History-Social Science Project (CHSSP) is a key partner of the Roland Marchand Center for Public Engagement at UC Davis. We are excited to announce that we have spent much of this summer training and working with graduate students on campus to support TK-12 education.
Under the direction of the Executive Director and Administrative Manager, provide event support for California Subject Matter Project (CSMP) operations at UC Davis, including but not limited to the California History-Social Science Project (CHSSP) and the Area 3 Writing Project (A3WP).
Responsible for program and event coordination and marketing. Assist with planning and scheduling events, workshops, meetings, and conferences. Coordinate event packets and handouts and arrange catering. Collect participant data for reporting requirements.
The CHSSP is excited to welcome Cindy Mata as the new Site Director at the UC Irvine History Project. Most recently, Mata has served as the Associate Director of the UCLA History-Geography Project, though she brings to UC Irvine years of experience in K-12 history-social science education, educational research, and teacher leadership.
In partnership with California Revealed, we are working with two high school teachers to develop inquiry-based teaching resources that will connect students with archival sources hosted by California Revealed.
California Revealed (CA-R), in partnership with the California History-Social Science Project (CHSSP), invites California educators to apply for its inaugural Educator Fellowship program. This is a special opportunity for K-12 educators to research and create curricular materials in history and the social sciences using CA-R’s digital collections, of which sound and moving images are especially vast.
