The Marchand Public Engagement Initiative provides opportunities for TK-university teachers to partner with community members and students to engage in substantive historical research to address current issues. These projects exemplify this kind of work:
- Davis Humanities Institute (DHI) Conversation with the Department of History: Russia and Ukraine
- In partnership with the Davis Humanities Institute, the Marchand Public Engagement Initiative promoted this event across social media platforms and brought K-12 teachers to the event. These teachers asked questions and learned how to discuss this difficult, timely topic with students.
- Current Context Articles
- Marchand Public Engagement Interns have supported the creation of Current Context articles that situate current events into broader historical context. One example includes a Current Context on the 2021 California Gubernatorial Recall Election.
- “Citizenship, Race, and Place: Frontiers in Asian American History”
- A CHSSP Site Director and a Marchand Public Engagement Intern co-wrote a portion of an article for the National Endowment for the Humanities’ National History Day Theme book. Their section focused on the legacy of Chinese exclusion and the creation of railroads, which connected to the theme of “Frontiers in History: People, Places, Ideas.”
- Civic Engagement and the State Seal
- This yearlong program, co-sponsored by the Leveraging Equity and Access in Democratic Education (LEADE) initiative, seeks to connect K-12 educators and administrators with university faculty and staff to develop robust civic education and action curriculum in schools across the state.
- Blog Post Writing
- Marchand Public Engagement Interns regularly author blog posts that discuss monthly CHSSP themes, current events, and historical topics of interest. These posts are designed for educators/administrators and are intended to take big ideas about teaching, history, or current issues and make them accessible for readers with limited time.
