Event Date

A New Summer Institute for K-12 Educators: Local Voices: Remembering Stories of Art, Power, & Community

Join us for a three-day summer institute in Los Angeles from July 15–17, 2025, co-sponsored by the Getty Research Institute and the UCLA History-Geography Project. This unique professional development opportunity invites K-12 educators to collaborate with scholars, artists, archivists, and curriculum coaches to develop social studies, ELA, and Ethnic Studies lessons incorporating oral histories of Black Los Angeles artists, as part of Getty's African American Art and History Initiative.

Participants will explore primary sources curated by Getty researchers, including oral histories, photographs, maps, flyers, and artwork. We will use these powerful documents to create lessons that amplify underrepresented narratives in local history, strengthen historical thinking and literacy skills, and integrate the arts into K-12 classes.

Through hands-on activities, educators will engage with first-person accounts and artwork that highlight the agency, joy, and community activism of Black Los Angeles artists. Selected materials will also highlight intersectional identities, incorporating women’s history, LGBTQ+ history, and more. Our goal is to co-create culturally relevant and sustaining lessons that connect students to local history, art, and Black Los Angeles history, challenging dominant narratives and fostering discussions on race, power, and community activism through art.

Application Details:

Teachers selected for the cohort will receive a $500 stipend upon completing their lesson.
