UC Berkeley History-Social Science Project, Deliberative Discourse for Controversial Conversations in the classroom
A Four-Part Virtual Series
Starting Tuesday 9.23.25, 4-5:30 pm PST
Learn a structured discourse protocol for controversial topics in which students research and explore the perspectives of different stakeholders while clarifying their own stance. The strategy can be modified based on how ‘hot’ the topic, though at all levels it encourages clarity and self reflection over ‘winning an argument’. The series will include discussion on planning for deliberative discourse and navigating controversy in the classroom.
Sessions will include:
- Protocol for engaging in controversial conversation.
- Considerations when choosing appropriate issues for deliberation.
- Framing questions to ensure a safe and productive conversation.
- A framework guiding adaptations of the protocol for different intensities of controversy
- Responding to unplanned controversies
Cost $100 for the series.
