Careers in Public Service

The Marchand Public Engagement Initiative aims to increase the number and scope of undergraduate and graduate students who consider public education and public service as career goals.

  • Education Policy
    print materials
    • The Marchand Public Engagement Interns are exposed to the development and dissemination of California’s educational policies.  The CHSSP and CSMP work to inform state-adopted documents that guide public instruction.  The History-Social Science Framework, as well as guidance documents from other disciplines, are central to the work of K-12 teachers but are often hidden from the work of Ph.D. Students. The internship program has provided an opportunity for interns to explore the broader California education policy landscape, including the roles played by the University of California Office of the President (UCOP), the California Department of Education (CDE), and other state agencies.
  • Public History at the California State Library: A Conversation with Alex Vassar
    • The Marchand Public Engagement Initiative supported an event in partnership with Dr. Corrie Decker to invite California State Library Public Information Officer Alex Vassar to discuss opportunities for research at the State Library. He also discussed his journey doing public history and working at the State Library.
