CHSSP and California Revealed Launch Educator Fellowship Program
Creating Opportunities for Archival Research, Pedagogical Mentorship, and Curriculum Development
Quick Summary
- CHSSP partnered with California Revealed to create an Educator Fellowship program for K-12 educators--Apply by December 16, 2022!
California Revealed (CA-R), in partnership with the California History-Social Science Project (CHSSP), invites California educators to apply for its inaugural Educator Fellowship program. This is a special opportunity for K-12 educators to research and create curricular materials in history and the social sciences using CA-R’s digital collections, of which sound and moving images are especially vast.
CA-R will award two Educator Fellowships for service between February 1, 2023 through August 30, 2023. The fellowships carry a stipend of $3,000 plus travel support for approximately 60 hours of research and curriculum development. CA-R will provide archival research support, and CHSSP will provide content and pedagogical mentorship.
The 2022/2023 Educator Fellowship Application is now open!
To be considered for the 2022/2023 Cataloging California program, please complete the application by Wednesday, December 16, 2022:
Application Information
Applications are especially welcome from K-12 classroom teachers and school librarians who specialize in History, Ethnic Studies, and the social sciences. As part of the application process, prospective Educator Fellows must create a research project that identifies a content area for further study. Some examples include the Latinx experience during the Great Depression, California’s farm laborers, and place-based community culture or traditions. In addition, the applicant will propose a curriculum development plan that applies their research for the classroom, such as primary source sets, lessons, and other instructional materials. Applicants are encouraged to browse the CA-R online collections to determine whether their research plan is feasible.
To qualify, applicants must:
- Teach California or U.S. History in a California elementary, middle, or high school
- Commit approximately 60 hours to working with California Revealed and the CHSSP to develop, implement, and promote educational resources, including two document sets, between January 1, 2023 and August 30, 2023. Hours will vary and work can be completed remotely.
Please apply using the 2022/2023 Educator Fellowship Application Form.

Combined, the document sets should include at least 15 primary and secondary sources directly related to the area of study and the following:
- An introduction and overview of the topic and its significance (1-2 pages)
- A list of applicable content standards and curriculum frameworks (History-Social Science, English Language Arts, English Language Development) and the Common Core State Standards.
- A list of possible inquiry questions that would give purpose to the documents for classroom instruction.
- An annotated bibliography with proper citations, as well as:
- An image and descriptions of each source for ADA compliance;
- Rationale for the inclusion of each source -- of its historical significance or educational value;
- Transcriptions of sources and/or excerpts, including handwritten notes and typed text;
- 2-3 suggestions for classroom instruction, such as literacy strategies, historical investigations, civic action projects, and community engagement activities; and
- Related urls for further exploration and study.
- Short videos for classroom use and/or social media post(s)
All written work must be submitted by June 30, 2023, followed by dissemination during Summer 2023. Fellows will work with CA-R and CHSSP to make their materials available to the public through online publication at partner websites.
