Reimagining W.E.B. DuBois's Data Portraits with Will Villalongo: Using Data Visualizations in the Classroom
Join the UC Santa Cruz History & Civics Project and special guest William Villalongo!
Our featured guest, multimedia artist and professor William Villalongo, will share his exciting project of reimagining W.E.B. Dubois’ historic data portraits, in which he uses current data to raise awareness of conditions around Black lives in the 21st Century. We will then further explore Dubois’ stunning visualizations and their context, as well as consider effective uses in the classroom of both those sources and a process of interrogating and re-imagining representations. This virtual webinar is the kick-off of our new program: Contextualizing and Extending Source-Based Lessons in The Monterey Bay Region.
This event is intended for anyone who appreciates amazing art or works at the intersections of community data, informed civic action, history, social science, ethnic studies, and STEAM education. (Invite your math and science colleagues!)
