Making Real the Promises of Restorative Justice in the Classroom

How can teachers practice restorative justice principles in real-time? Where does it go wrong? Why is it so hard? We will discuss the limitations and potential of the RJ framework, as informed by lessons in the presenter's recent book, Everyday Restorative Justice: Moving from Crisis Response to Positive School Culture (Teachers College Press, 2026).
About the presenter:
Tatiana Chaterji, MFA served as one of the first restorative justice facilitators in Oakland Unified School District, on Ohlone land. She is a longtime practitioner of non-carceral responses to harm, conflict mediation, drama therapy, Participatory Action Research, and Theatre of the Oppressed. Living with a brain injury from community violence and grieving the loss of too many students to the same, she works to create pathways for true accountability and healing beyond police and prisons. She carries over fifteen years of restorative justice experience in schools, youth detention/adult prison settings, and community organizations.
