Informed Action Civics: Empowering Students through Applied Curriculum and Historical Thinking:

The UC Berkeley History-Social Science Project (UCBHSSP) in partnership with the Santa Clara County Office of Education (SCCOE) and the Santa Mateo County Office of Education (SMCOE) iintegrates civically-engaged project-based learning with History-Social Studies curriculum. Through participation in an inquiry group, teacher-researchers collaboratively designed, implemented and refined civic engagement projects that are informed by history-social science (H-SS) course curricula. By integrating civic engagement with course content, this model helps students learn and apply historical content knowledge and critically important discipline-specific literacy and analytical skills to their understanding of, and response to, contemporary social and political issues. Devin Hess, a partner from a county office, will share how they developed this approach in collaboration with Bay Area teachers. A participating teacher will share what they learned through the inquiry process and how they have implemented the framework into the instruction. Presenters will share exemplar units and student-facing templates.
