Teaching Democracy

Teaching Democracy was a partnership between the CHSSP and Cal Humanities as part of the latter’s Searching for Democracy initiative. The program featured a free webinar series (April – August 2012) geared toward educators of American history and government.  Renowned scholars and CHSSP teacher leaders led the webinars, addressing questions and subjects critical to the study of American democracy:

  • Presidential power
  • The origins of the Constitution
  • British monarchy and colonial rule
  • Civil rights and citizenship
  • Representative government

 

Teaching Democracy sought to enhance students’ ability to understand and grapple with becoming an engaged participant in a democratic society. We hope the program’s primary sources, lessons, and presentation recordings will help students make connections between our founding principles and our current government.  These curricular resources include:
